NFL News & Notes

Jay-Z
"I'm not a business man, I'm a business...man!"
If anyone is going to succeed making the transition from music to sports agent it's Jay-Z. As it stands now his two NFL clients are probably not going to be the stars that put his company over the edge. I'll pass on Geno Smith as a franchise QB and DeSean Jackson isn't exactly in the same class as Fitzgerald,  Megatron, or even A.J. Green. Still, if Jay-Z can sign legit stars and keep them happy then future players will be lining up to sign with him, if for nothing else to be invited over for a BBQ to meet Beyonce.

Pats
Let's start with Tebow. I don't know what Belichick is doing with Tebow. I wouldn't have signed him and I think he (Tebow) will never become a franchise QB. What I do know is Bill Belichick has forgotten more football than I'll probably ever know and that he is one of the best football CEO's that's ever been. He's not infallible, but he also has a knack for doing smart things few people see coming. Tebow won't cost the team much in terms of money or success. Why not bring him in?

Now, moving on to things of slightly more concern; The Gronk. Five surgeries in one offseason is rough. Guys generally don't get healthier as their career progresses so I'm thinking we've seen the best of the Gronk. The guy's had some bad luck, but his immaturity makes me wonder if he can overcome the mental aspects of getting healthy. Gronk reminds me of someone, but I can't quite figure out who...

And that leads me to the other tight end, Aaron Hernandez. Details are still sketchy at this point, but here's what's been reported thus far. Man shot in head near Aaron's home. Police search Aaron's home. Man was dating sister of Aaron's girlfriend. Aaron facing civil suit for allegedly shooting a man in February. And I'm out. Things like this don't end well and I'm not talking about a person's football career. So much of what fans see/know about a celebrity or athlete's life is just the tip of the iceberg. When the tip involves murder, shootings, familial relationships, and young men with lots of money then it's time to go. I don't know how all of this is going to get resolved, but I do know that if I'm a GM I want three things to happen: I want Hernandez to get safe, get his life together, and I want him off the field, and if need be my team, until he does.

Gregg Williams and Bernard Pollard
Shut the f#@* up! Stop with all this "kill" talk, or at least stop getting quoted talking like that. You're not a better motivator because you use those words. I know that such things are part of the traditional football vernacular, but it's time to grow up and realize the world you're living in. People are actually being killed by other people out here, and for reasons far more frivolous than football. Stop invoking words that, because of how accessible real death and devastation are to most people, are just not inspiring or appropriate. Stop being proud of being a neanderthal.

Johnny Manziel
Done with this kid. Not mature, poor twitter filter, not a dynamic thrower, and believes way too much that one (great) year of college ball equals stardom. Future NFL franchise QBs are mature beyond their years, generally quiet in the offseason, and don't make waves outside of the hash marks. I hear/see Manziel way too much these days and while that's probably not all his doing (Texas A&M wants lots of Manziel in Aggie paraphernalia out there), I don't like how visible this kid's college boy attitude is. You can't imagine Luck, RG3, or Wilson tweeting what Manziel did and that's one big reason why I can't imagine Manziel leading a franchise like those guys do. Bullspit like that tweet is one reason why smart GMs can't wait to pass on you, whenever you might declare for the draft.
